I recently purchased this sub from a box store sale (really didn't want to have it shipped.)

My 10+ year old Carver Sunfire finally failed (AMAZING reference sub!) I waited awhile to replace it while researching great options without wanting to spend big $$$ for this component (there is no need if you do your homework anymore.) I'm not a hardcore audiophile, but I wanted a subwoofer that had mixed performance for home theater and music, which is a tall task for many subwoofers in general. They typically excel at one or the other without being well-balanced for both. This sub box housing is large, so you should probably have a good idea of how much room you have available for placement (and that's the only reason I'm dinging it one star for most.)
I've been very pleased with the performance of the Klipsch and recommend it.

First off, I appreciate the lengths that the first reviewer went to in creating thee most thorough and informative review I've ever read. While I'm sure the author was being serious during all of that, in the end I couldn't help but giggle thinking of a scene from "Good Morning Vietnam"

Average Joe Citizen, you are not alone my friend. My review will contain nothing more than my humble opinion written in plain english. Reading it will not require an instruction manual to understand what I am saying.

So here's my review of the Klipsch RW-12d:

I spent at least six months shopping around, reading reviews, pondering, listening to different products, and this is the one that spoke to me. Yeah, the price was more than I wanted to spend, but it was well worth it. I wanted something that was smooth and clean, but powerful enough to punch me right in the chest, and that's exactly what I got!

I'm going skip all the little intimate details as far as quoting specs, Hz, etc., and get straight to what you really wanna know:

Music: I kid you not when I say I am discovering a whole new dimension to the music I've been listening to all my life. I listen to everything from Mozart to Marilyn Manson, and it all sounded (and felt) awesome... even pipe organs sounded perfect. It doesn't overload the room with big boomy bass all the time. Wow, I don't know where to begin. These RF-52 II speakers embody everything I expect from Klipsch!

First I will start by mentioning Klipsch's trademark horn tweeters: they are simply /fantastic/! They are crisp, clean and bright and do not exhibit the harshness some might claim all horns deliver. I wanted speakers which would do Pink Floyd's work justice - particularly Dark Side of the Moon (arguably one of the best-engineered albums ever). I was not disappointed.

When I hooked the speakers up to my receiver and put the CD in I was blown away - the "heartbeat" at the beginning of "Speak to Me/Breathe" was faithfully reproduced, with a depth I would never expect from 5.25" woofers, allowing these speakers to hold their own even with the subwoofer turned off. Midrange is clear and the tweeters are simply breathtaking - I could hear every nuance, and makes me grateful I have been so selective about attending concerts, and using hearing protection after helping friends with sound systems at gigs, to preserve my hearing. Voices are crisp, bass has depth and is well damped, so it's accurate-sounding, and much to my pleasure I identified subtle details in DSotM I never noticed before (I always love noticing "new" subtleties in their work). Hearing "Clare Torry" is performance on the "Great Gig in the Sky" through these speakers is an experience I only ever heard before through high-end Sennheiser or Sony studio headphones. The cymbals, clocks, and other instruments and sounds where there are subtle high harmonic frequencies in real life are faithfully reproduced by these speakers.

Already own rf-82's in a home theater suite and picked up rf-42's for 1/2 off. Was expecting the Klipsch "sound" for mids and highs but wasn't expecting 2 4.5 inch woofers to be this powerful! I'm running them with an old Technics receiver from the mid 80's at 65 watts/channel with just a cd player in the living room. I thought for sure I was going to have to pick up a new receiver and subwoofer to get any real bass but I was mistaken. The sub would be nice but now just an afterthought. You just need to give them some room behind for the ports to work properly. I have them about 18 inches from the wall and get plenty of nice bass, you can really feel the air from the port when you push them a bit. Overall I will definately reccommend these.....especially if space is an issue.

My relationship with Klipsch started when I purchased a Pioneer VSX-1020-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver and the Klispch HD Theater 1000, to replace a Bose CineMate Series II Digital Home Theater Speaker System for our living room. Not being able to convince the wife away from the commercial draw of Bose and the simple plug and play setup of the CineMate, I got to enjoy the crisp 5.1 satellite surround sound in my small 10' x 12' man cave. Needless to say, the setup was fantastic and the Advanced MCACC in the Pioneer balanced out the Klipsch system and created a truly enveloping sound.

Impressed with the setup, I moved the everything down to the living room (26' x 14'), re-ran the Advanced MCACC, and tested a few movies and music. What a disappointment. Even with the 200 watt RPW-10 in the corner, the inadequate frequency range of the satellites were exposed in the larger room. The once enveloping sound was now hollow and one-dimensional.

I was quite surprised to see these listed on Amazon - the Icon series was created by Klipsch as a Best Buy exclusive, and usually when you see exclusive brands at a big box store there is a price/performance mismatch. But I don't see that with the Amazon offering.

When it comes to components, speakers are the single thing that will most govern the overall sound quality of your system. And there is a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo surrounding these speakers. Lots of arcane numbers, mystical wattage ceilings, and so on. Please let me distill this down to the one number you need to know about these speakers:

The setup for these speakers was a snap. Good terminal connections. Just a simple mount for the base to stabilize the speaker from tipping. Very stable.

I am using these for a secondary viewing area and as a music studio reference speaker. The higher power handling is very good with no distortion and very very crisp high and mid-range, typical with Klipsch horn driver. The low end is slightly limited which can be offset with proper EQ without the aid of a sub-woofer. The addition of a sub, while not needed does add improved low end. (watch your cross over frequency of the sub) The Klipsch 12 inch sub is a great addition.
